How do you top 2003’s The Grandeur That Is Rome? Monarch’s 2007 release Lowly takes a nice run at it.

Low & Behold is the unlikely collaboration between Jason Martin (Starflyer 59) and Ryan Clark (Demon Hunter) – now 7 years in the making. Drawing from Starflyer’s signature brand of shoe gaze, and injecting a healthy dose of 80s nostalgia, Uppers is a study in classic dark wave. Reverb-drenched guitars and haunting vocals recall a raw aesthetic of sound pioneered by groups like The Sisters Of Mercy, Depeche Mode, and Echo & The Bunnymen.

Piano, subtle electronics, soaring vocals, epic arrangements, thoughtful lyrics…..interested? Then Check out Monarch’s latest Lowly. It is one of my favorites from the first part of 2008 largely because I missed the October 2007 release. The album continues down the path started on their first album “The Granduer That Was Rome”
This unheralded band (made up of Brennan Strawn) finds it’s home on the equally unheralded Northern Records.
