America, Rome, Cousin Eddie and Coasting on Fumes

America, like Rome seems to just be coasting on the fumes from past greatness, writes Victor Davis Hanson. I thought that Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation coasting into town on fumes with his motorhome serves as a good metaphor.

Like Rome, America apparently can coast for a long time on the fumes of its wonderful political heritage and economic dynamism — even if both are little understood or appreciated by most who still benefit from them.
