It’s always great to see an artist like Mat Kearney start to get some attention. In this case it’s Pick of the week at USATODAY
“I guess we’re all just one phone call from our knees,” Mat Kearney sings in Closer to Love, the rare love song that’s about more than good feelings.
The first single from Kearney’s City of Black & White, out May 19, takes life’s storms and unexpected tragedies as the starting point for a gently reassuring song about hope, intimacy and an unquenchable spirit. You can hear that single here at Kearney’s website.
Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Mat Kearney is set to release his new album, City of Black & White, on May 19 on Aware/Columbia Records. Following the success of his major label debut, Nothing Left To Lose, Kearney has returned with an evolved sound and a world of new experiences.
After spending five years traveling the country establishing himself as a new artist, Mat dug his roots into his new hometown of Nashville, TN, allowing the songs on City of Black & White to evolve from various places and sources – in the back room of a studio where he stopped in to visit a friend, writing with people he met at coffee shops, hearing someone fiddling around with the guitar and humming along. He opened up the writing process to friends and to the community of musicians in Nashville, and crafted songs such as “Fire and Rain,” “Here We Go,” and “Closer To Love.”
“Closer To Love,” the album’s first single will go to radio March 10 and touring plans for 2009 are underway.
